I purchased the domain “ajourneyintomy50s.com" when I was 51.
I’m 56 now and I’m finally beginning the blog I bought the domain for in the first place.
So typical of me. I’ve always been a bit of a procrastinator so this really isn’t any surprise at all. But as I thought about it more and more, I’m really glad I didn’t. To some extent, I’m glad my journey into my 50s has, to date, been very organic and spontaneous in how it developed. I tend to be an over thinker and writing a blog may have changed my current trajectory and I’ve got to say that I’m pretty happy with how this whole 50s journey has been going.
Now I’ve struggled with what my first blog post would be about. I’m guessing a lot of bloggers have that same challenge with that first one. I have so many ideas written down and even some draft posts, but none of them seemed right.
But this morning while I was enjoying my daily ritual of coffee and dark chocolate before I start the day, I was also scrolling through Twitter. Now not a lot of my friends have a Twitter account. Baby Boomers just don’t seem as enamored by the platform as the younger generation is, but I love Twitter. In fact, it’s probably my favorite social media platform. I will tell you why later on another blog post. It’s definitely on my list!
Anyway, today someone on Twitter posted the following question:
“If you could stay one age forever, with all your current knowledge, what age would it be?”
This post got a lot of responses….hundreds by the end of the second hour. 95% of people responded that they would choose to stay somewhere between the age of 25-35 years old. Since Twitter users primarily are a young demographic, this isn’t much of a surprise, but what I was surprised at was how quickly and easily I was able to respond. I didn’t need to think about it, the words just flowed.
Here’s what I typed:
“55….humbled, grateful, wiser, financially secure, kids are independent, you are more confident, you’re less concerned about what others think of you and they are less concerned what you think….and you’re still healthy. Anything is possible, but you are fully aware that life is short…..its freeing…..
If I had more characters than Twitter allows, I would have added:
“free to speak your opinion, free to pursue all those hobbies, dreams and interests you have been putting off for a million reasons…..free to reflect on what you have and express gratitude for all that life has gifted you with….”
At 56, I’m happier, more fulfilled and more grateful than I have ever been in my life. It hasn’t been perfect. There have been heartbreaking moments along with once a lifetime magical moments. In other words, it’s pretty much life as it has always been for most of us. But I’ve found it’s me who has changed. My mindset and my outlook are very different. I suppose this change could have happened in any decade, but I guess I’m a slow learner and it took me a while! I’m just glad I got here and I can’t wait to tell you all about it.
So welcome to my journey. I look forward to sharing more and hearing about your journey and your story too….no matter what life decade you are in! My plan for this blog is to chat about all the things….family, fashion, food, hobbies, health, travel and anything else that inspires us! You don’t have to be in your 50s to join us here. Everyone is welcome!
Thanks for reading! I’m truly happy you’re here!
